Is numerology biblical?

A DoYouReallyBelieve.com user asked the following question: “Is numerology biblical?”

For what it is worth, these are my thoughts on this excellent question:

Pi: The Transcendental Number, numerologyIn the past I’ve looked into Numerology, Bible Math, and Bible Codes because I was fascinated with trying to figure it out. I began to get so fascinated with Bible Codes that I started reading more about it than actually reading what the written Word of truth (The Bible) was saying.  This is when I realized that the Bible is important and numbers/codes may have some truth but I believe the Bible should be the first priority in understanding God’s truth before stuff like Bible Codes, Numerology, etc.

Numerology is “any study of the purported divine, mystical or other special relationship between a number and some coinciding observed (or perceived) events. It has many systems and traditions and beliefs.  Today, numerology is often associated with the paranormal, alongside astrology and similar divinatory arts.”

When I read the definition of Numerology I think of the following passage:

Occult Practices

When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there.  Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.  Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you.  Deuteronomy 18:9-12 (NIV)

As I have refined what I believe, I have found that the basis of my faith is the written Word of God.  Once I master this knowledge I will look to other things.  With this statement, know I believe that during my lifetime I will not be able to master all the knowledge in the Bible, if only because it seems to penetrate my heart with newness every time I read it.  So stating , “Once I master this knowledge I will look to other things” is never going to happen in my lifetime for myself!

In addition to my thoughts here is an interesting site:  http://carm.org/what-biblical-numerology

What do you think?  Do you think Numerology is biblical?  Do you spend time reading the Bible?  Are you trying to learn more?  Are you going to places  where you should not?  When in doubt are you praying for wisdom?
