Several years ago, I had a chance to go to Africa. While I was there, I visited a nomadic tribe. It was the most amazing thing that I had ever seen. Animals were everywhere. The people seemed to be in dire need, yet they were so happy. While I was there, I noticed that a baby was lying in manure. I started to pick the child up but was told that I should not. Later I realized that it was not customary for a man to pick up a baby. They did not want me to offend them.
Now back home, I am still haunted by the thought that there are people living in the world in such great need, while I have everything.
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:16-18 (NIV)
