How should you show love?

I think I have always wondered how love should work.  It seems that I have fallen short loving someone with having the intentions to get something in return.  Based on the total view this is really the opposite of love.  What do you think about the following on love?

Love in Action

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.  Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.  Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.  Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.  Do not be conceited.  Romans 12:9-16(NIV)

When Jesus looked down from the cross, He asked God to forgive the people that had done what they had done to Him.  Are you sincere when you love?  Do you hate evil things?  Do you honor any and every one?  Is the definition of Love the ability to totally forgive and honor every one that seeks truth and goodness?  Is love the ability to bless those who persecute you?

For me this is an area I need to really pray and ask God for help.  I have seen Him teach me love with the goal to get nothing in return!  What about you?
