Is it OK to be selfish?

This question seems to not be one that anyone would answer with words but seems to be one that many people scream in actions.

I feel like the more I live the more I am willing to give up and just trust God.  This giving up is the ability to seek God rather than self.  How can we test this in our life?

Look at the people around you.  Why do you do things for them?  Do you do it to gain or to give?  Are you willing to ask your closest friends, family, and/or spouse, “If I could be a better person to help you survive what could I do?” Also, take the time and pray that God will give you the ability to see what people around you need.  When you do something for someone, think about the fact that if you do not get a ‘thank you’ or even noticed, you will do it for God with a thankful heart.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.  Philippians 2:3-4(NIV)

Can you do this?  What will it take for you to not take?  Have you done for people to just get from them?  Do you owe them an apology?  Are you full of selfish ambition and vain conceit?
